Our Approach

At The New School we focus on building strong foundations for learning - doing our utmost to give our children a real love of learning that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

In this small, safe, school community, we are able to create a warm, familial atmosphere where children are able to feel a sense of belonging and have the confidence to be themselves.

Teaching is delivered through a topic based approach, which is carefully planned to ensure that each child will enjoy an excellent grounding in the key skills whilst incorporating a child-centred creative approach to learning that is vital in an infant environment.

Young, enquiring minds are encouraged to develop strong reading skills enabling them to read widely and discover for themselves as much as they can about the world in which they live. Numeracy is developed through open learning, games and topic work. Our children also experience a variety of sport and games, music and language not only through the regular school programme but also through the extra-curricular clubs we make available. A love of learning is evident in every child and we work hard to ensure that they feel encouraged, supported and understood as individuals.

At the heart of what we do lies mutual respect; respect between child and teacher and between the children themselves.
By the end of their time with us, we have worked hard to ensure that our children of all abilities have made excellent progress and that they are prepared to take on the challenges they will face at the school of their choice. We are proud to have 100% pass rate in gaining places for our children in the selective school they applied for. We also have an enviable number of children achieving scholarships to Exeter School but above all, our children simply love learning and love coming to school.

It is essential that each child feels valued, nurtured, encouraged and happy during their time with us and we believe that such attention to the individual, will provide them with the strongest foundations on which they can continue to build throughout their lives.
